Common Types of Ants In MA
Massachusetts is home to a variety of ant species including carpenter ants and European fire ants. Some of these pests enter buildings through small cracks and crevices, often attracted to food spills in kitchens or cafeterias. Others infest leaf litter and debris around a home or business. Although they can be unpleasant and bothersome, few are considered dangerous.
Carpenter Ants
At nearly three-quarters of an inch in length, carpenter ants are one of the largest types of ants in Massachusetts. These shiny black insects tunnel through damp or rotting wood to build nests and expand their colonies. If left untreated, carpenter ants can cause significant damage over time.
European Fire Ants
This tiny, reddish-brown ant is an invasive species in New England. Areas of lawns or gardens that trap heat and moisture, such as topsoil, rotting logs, and large tree root systems, are ideal nesting sites. The European fire ant is aggressive, and it will sting any person or animal it sees as a threat to the colony. Their stings are painful and can cause serious allergic reactions.
Ant Control
Since ants are tiny and build large colonies, they can be difficult to prevent or control on your own. If you see trails of ants inside a home or business, a nest may be nearby. Call Waltham Pest Services to keep ant populations from harming you and your property.
